Bengaluru Man Arrested for Secretly Filming Women, Posting Videos Online Without Consent

A 26-year-old man was arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly filming women on city streets without their consent and posting the videos on social media, after a student discovered her video online and appealed for help on Instagram.
The arrest came after the student, studying in Bengaluru, found a video of herself recorded on Church Street, shot “very inappropriately” and posted online without her knowledge. Despite reporting the video and requesting its removal, she received no response and began getting vulgar messages from strangers who saw the clip.
In a video posted on Instagram, she accused the account, which claimed to showcase “street scenes,” of secretly stalking and recording women in public spaces like Church Street and Koramangala. The account reportedly had over 10,000 followers and featured videos of women who appeared unaware or visibly startled, calling it a “serious breach of consent.”
“Being in a public place or having a public Instagram profile does not mean consent to be filmed,” she said in the video, tagging @blrcitypolice and @cybercrimecid in her appeal after being unable to directly tag the page.
Following her complaint, Bengaluru Police identified and arrested Gurudeep Singh, 26, as the person behind the social media account. A senior police official confirmed the arrest, adding that the case highlighted the importance of cyber safety and consent in public spaces.
The incident has sparked anger on social media, with many users demanding stricter action against such forms of digital harassment. Several Bengaluru residents shared their concerns under the student’s post, calling for accountability for online pages that record and post women’s images without permission under the guise of “street content.”
Bengaluru, known for its bustling public spots like Church Street and Koramangala, has previously witnessed concerns around women’s safety in public spaces, with the police encouraging residents to report incidents of harassment, stalking, and privacy violations immediately.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and IPC, and further investigation is underway to identify if additional videos were recorded or shared without consent.
