Bengaluru Woman Assaulted Outside Mosque After Domestic Dispute; Six Arrested

A 38-year-old woman was brutally assaulted with sticks and pipes outside a Bengaluru mosque after a domestic dispute; six men have been arrested following public outrage.

A shocking video emerged from Bengaluru showing a woman, identified as Shabina Banu, being violently assaulted by a group of men outside the Jama Masjid in Tavarekere. The incident, which occurred on April 7, reportedly followed a domestic complaint filed by her husband. Six men have been arrested after the video went viral, prompting swift police action.

Shabina was allegedly beaten with sticks, pipes, and clubs, while some attackers even tried to hurl stones at her. According to her statement, she was summoned to the mosque along with her relative Nasreen (32) and a man named Fayaz after her husband, Jameel Ahmed Shameer, filed a complaint.

Police identified and arrested six accused based on the viral video and Shabina’s complaint. The arrested include Mohammad Niyaz, Mohammad Gauspeer, Chand Basha, Inayat Ullah, Dastagir, and Rasool.

“Based on the complaint and video evidence, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” a senior police officer confirmed. “We have formed a special investigation team to probe the incident further.”

In her complaint, Shabina, who works as a house help, stated that on April 7, her relative Nasreen visited her. The two, along with her children, went to a hill in Bukkambudi and returned later that evening.

Following medical advice, Shabina took her prescribed medication and lay down to rest. Nasreen, who had planned to leave, stayed back at Shabina’s house. During this time, Fayaz, an acquaintance, also visited.

Later that night, Jameel, her husband, returned home and reportedly grew agitated upon seeing Nasreen and Fayaz there. He is said to have gone to the mosque and filed a complaint, which led to Shabina and the others being summoned.

The mosque meeting, instead of resolving the dispute, allegedly escalated into a violent assault outside the religious premises. Eyewitness video footage circulated widely on social media showed multiple men striking Shabina with weapons.

This led to an outpouring of outrage from citizens and women’s rights groups, demanding strict action and questioning the role of religious spaces in settling personal disputes.

Shabina registered a formal complaint on April 11. Bengaluru Police have initiated an investigation and are reviewing mosque CCTV footage and witness testimonies.

Authorities have assured a thorough probe. “No one is above the law. We are taking this matter seriously,” a senior officer said, adding that further arrests could follow depending on the investigation’s outcome.
