Two Lecturers, Friend Arrested for Alleged Student Rape and Blackmail In Bengaluru
Two lecturers from a private college in Moodabidri and their friend have been arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly raping a student multiple times and blackmailing her using video footage, police said on Tuesday. The arrests were made after the student filed a complaint with the Karnataka State Women’s Commission.
The victim, a student at the same college where the accused taught, alleged that Narendra, a physics lecturer, lured her to Bengaluru under the pretext of giving academic notes and raped her at a friend’s residence. Later, Sandeep, a biology lecturer, reportedly blackmailed the student with a video of the assault and raped her again.
Police said Anup, a friend of the lecturers, also raped the student after threatening her with claims of possessing CCTV footage showing her visiting his room.
The assaults took place over a month ago but came to light when the student informed her parents, following which a formal complaint was filed with the Karnataka State Women’s Commission.
Based on the commission’s directions, Marathahalli Police registered an FIR and arrested all three accused. The case was registered on July 5.
Joint Commissioner of Police, East Division, Ramesh Banoth, said, “Based on the victim’s complaint, we have arrested three individuals. We received information from the Women’s Commission, recorded the victim’s formal statement, and proceeded with the arrests. A detailed investigation is currently underway.”
The arrests have sparked outrage on social media, with users demanding strict punishment for the accused and better safeguards for students on campuses. The Karnataka State Women’s Commission has assured the victim and her family of all support during the investigation.
The incident has highlighted concerns over student safety and the misuse of authority within educational institutions in Karnataka, as similar cases of harassment and abuse of students by faculty have emerged in the past.
