Case Registered Against Sunny Deol, 'Jaat' Team for Allegedly Hurting Religious Sentiments

A case has been filed at Jalandhar’s Sadar Police Station against Bollywood actor Sunny Deol and the team behind the film Jaat, including Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, director Gopichand Malineni, and producer Naveen Yerneni, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a scene in the movie.

The complaint, lodged by Vikalp Gold, a resident of Pholdiwal village in Jalandhar, alleges that a crucifixion scene in Jaat mocks Lord Jesus Christ, thereby offending the Christian community. The contentious scene reportedly features Randeep Hooda’s character standing beneath a crucifix inside a church while congregants pray, accompanied by depictions of hooliganism and intimidation.

Members of the Christian community staged a protest outside the Police Commissioner’s office, demanding action against the filmmakers. They submitted a memorandum asserting that the scene desecrates the church’s sacred space, particularly the pulpit.

The case has been registered under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to acts intended to outrage religious feelings. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter.

In response to the controversy, actor Sunny Deol stated, “We are not talking about religion. We are artists; we belong to the country. We love everyone, and everyone loves us. We are all part of one country.”

Randeep Hooda, who portrays the antagonist in Jaat, emphasized that the film does not target any specific religion or community. He remarked, “There is an agent in the film… but it’s not about any religion or caste.”

Despite the controversy, Jaat has performed well at the box office, grossing over ₹75 crore in its opening week. The film, directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, was released on April 10, 2025.

Jaat is a Hindi-language action film featuring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda in lead roles. The movie follows a mysterious passenger whose demand for an apology leads to a confrontation with a crime boss. The film also stars Regina Cassandra, Saiyami Kher, and Vineet Kumar Singh.

As the investigation proceeds, the filmmakers may face legal scrutiny over the alleged offense. The outcome could influence how religious themes are portrayed in Indian cinema moving forward.
