CBI Closes Sushant Singh Rajput Death Case: Suicide Confirmed, No Foul Play Found
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a closure report in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, ruling it a suicide with no evidence of foul play, nearly five years after the actor was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020.
On March 22, 2025, the CBI submitted its closure report to a special court in Mumbai, concluding a high-profile investigation. Sources said the agency found no evidence to support murder claims, aligning with initial Mumbai Police findings of suicide.
Sushant’s family had alleged murder, but a former CBI official stated, “There was no oral or material evidence to show it was a case of murder.” The agency awaited the actor’s sister for questioning, but she did not appear.
Official sources confirmed that scientific evidence, including an AIIMS forensic report, showed no signs of foul play. The postmortem listed “asphyxia due to hanging” as the cause of death, with no suicide note found at the scene.

Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant’s girlfriend, faced abetment charges and an NCB drug case, spending 27 days in jail before bail in 2020. Her advocate, Satish Maneshinde, said, “We are grateful to the CBI for thoroughly investigating and closing the case.”
On June 13, 2020, Sushant retired to his room after dinner, making unanswered calls to Rhea Chakraborty and Mahesh Shetty at 2 AM. He later searched online about “schizophrenia,” “bipolar disorder,” and “painless death,” IANS reported.
Maneshinde criticized the media, stating, “The amount of false narrative on social media and electronic media was uncalled for.” He praised India’s judiciary, adding, “Every citizen crying for justice has hope due to our vibrant judiciary.”
The Mumbai court will now decide whether to accept the CBI’s closure report or order further investigation. Sushant’s family can file a protest petition if they contest the findings, potentially prolonging the legal process.
