Janhvi Kapoor Sparks Outrage by Liking Reel Shading Madhuri Dixit, Praising Sridevi

Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has found herself at the center of a social media storm after she recently ‘liked’ an Instagram reel that controversially compared her late mother, legendary actress Sridevi, to Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit. The reel praised Sridevi’s performance in Khuda Gawah while alleging Madhuri Dixit won a Filmfare award for a “vulgar step” in Beta, sparking accusations that Janhvi is subtly criticising the veteran star.

The Instagram reel in question, which has since gained viral traction, featured a split screen. One side showcased Madhuri Dixit’s iconic “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” dance sequence from the film Beta, with overlaid text claiming she won the Filmfare Best Actress award for a “vulgar step” and “doing nothing.” The other side depicted Sridevi in her dual role in Khuda Gawah, with text asserting she was “ignored” for delivering a “landmark performance” that carried the film.

A screenshot showing Janhvi Kapoor’s official Instagram handle among those who had ‘liked’ this contentious post quickly spread across social media platforms, particularly Reddit, igniting fierce debate among fans and critics.

The online reaction has been largely critical, with many users accusing the Mr. & Mrs. Mahi actress of indirectly shading Madhuri Dixit in an attempt to elevate her late mother’s legacy. “Even she will come up with the algorithm story now,” one Reddit user commented, referencing the recent controversy where cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Tamannaah Bhatia claimed their Instagram accounts had “accidentally liked” problematic reels.

Another comment read, “Wait for her to join the Kohli-Tamannaah gang of accidental like posts.” Some users defended Madhuri Dixit’s accolades, with one stating, “Yes, Madhuri’s Beta was a hit, and she performed brilliantly. But acting-wise too, she earned that award. It wasn’t just a dance number.” Others adopted a sarcastic tone, with one jesting, “Another victim of the algorithm pandemic… hoping Instagram comes with a vaccine soon.”

Janhvi Kapoor has not yet issued any public statement addressing the viral post or clarifying whether the ‘like’ was intentional or an inadvertent tap. However, with screenshots continuing to circulate and discussion threads online buzzing with speculation, it appears the internet remains skeptical of any potential “accidental like” explanation. The incident draws parallels to other recent celebrity social media gaffes where similar “algorithm error” claims were met with disbelief.
