Kamal Haasan Sparks Controversy with ‘Kannada Born from Tamil’ Remark, Faces Backlash in Karnataka
Actor Kamal Haasan has landed in controversy over remarks made during a film event in Chennai, where he claimed that the Kannada language was “born out of Tamil.” The statement, made on Saturday during the audio launch of his upcoming film Thug Life, triggered strong reactions from pro-Kannada groups and political leaders in Karnataka.
Speaking at the Chennai event, Haasan began his speech with the Tamil phrase “Uyire Urave Tamizhe” and then said, “Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line,” while referring to Kannada actor Shivarajkumar, who was also present on stage.
The remark quickly drew ire in Karnataka, with members of Kannada Rakshana Vedike tearing down Thug Life banners in Bengaluru and issuing warnings to Haasan.
“Kamal Haasan said Tamil is better than Kannada. We warn him—if he continues to insult our language, there will be protests. His movies will face a ban in Karnataka,” said Praveen Shetty, president of Kannada Rakshana Vedike.
Some activists reportedly attempted to confront the actor at a promotional event in Bengaluru, planning to throw black ink on him. Protesters later claimed Haasan avoided the appearance after learning about their plans.
BJP Karnataka State President B.Y. Vijayendra took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn Haasan’s remarks, calling them “uncultured behaviour” and “arrogant.” He demanded an unconditional apology and accused the actor of showing “ungratefulness” despite having worked in Kannada cinema.
“Artists must respect all languages. Kamal Haasan has now insulted 6.5 crore Kannadigas. Kannada’s history spans over 2,500 years and should never be undermined,” Vijayendra wrote.
The controversy underscores the linguistic and regional sensitivities between states, particularly in southern India. Language remains a potent cultural identity marker in both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and past incidents involving language pride have led to protests, bans, and political clashes.
As pressure mounts, calls are growing for Haasan to clarify his remarks or issue an apology. Pro-Kannada groups have warned of intensifying protests and a possible boycott of Thug Life in Karnataka if no action is taken.
