Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui is back in the spotlight, but this time it’s for legal trouble. A formal complaint has been filed against him over his new JioHotstar show, Hafta Vasooli, with allegations that it insults multiple religions and spreads obscenity. The complaint, lodged by advocate Amita Sachdeva, has stirred up a storm just days after the show’s debut on February 14, 2025.

Sachdeva took to X to share details of her complaint, accusing Faruqui of being a “habitual offender.” She claims Hafta Vasooli, a satirical newsroom-style comedy, crosses the line by mocking religious beliefs, violating cultural values, and corrupting young minds. Her complaint calls for an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 196 (promoting enmity), 299 (hurting religious sentiments), and 353 (defamation), alongside provisions of the IT Act. “The complaint has been emailed and will be submitted in person on Monday,” she wrote, vowing to escalate the matter to court if authorities don’t act.

The backlash doesn’t stop there. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has also jumped in, demanding an immediate ban on the show. In a post on X, the group slammed Faruqui for using “foul language” and urged JioHotstar to take responsibility for what they call a moral decline. The show, featuring guests like Sharib Hashmi and Vivian Dsena in its first episode, blends humor with commentary on politics and culture.

This isn’t Faruqui’s first brush with controversy. In 2021, he was arrested in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly offending Hindu sentiments during a stand-up gig, spending over a month in jail before getting bail. The latest row follows a similar uproar in the comedy world, with podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia and comedian Samay Raina facing FIRs over crude remarks on India’s Got Latent. That episode’s fallout even reached Parliament and the Supreme Court.

As of now, Faruqui hasn’t responded to the allegations. With two episodes of Hafta Vasooli already out, all eyes are on whether this legal challenge will halt its run—or fuel its notoriety.
