The 2025 Oscars have spotlighted Indian cinema once again, with the short film ‘Anuja’ receiving a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Announced on January 23, this year’s nominations were delayed due to LA wildfires but were finally revealed in a ceremony hosted by Bowen Yang, Rachel Sennott, Sian Heder, and Eric Roth at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The event was broadcast live on various platforms including Disney+ Hotstar and ABC’s Good Morning America.

‘Anuja’ is not just a film; it’s a narrative of resilience and hope, telling the tale of two sisters, Anuja and Palak, who work in a garment factory. This poignant story, directed by Adam J. Graves, showcases the harsh realities faced by working children and their capacity for change.

The film was brought to life by a powerful collaboration, including Oscar-winner Guneet Monga Kapoor, who has now been nominated for her third Oscar, and actress Priyanka Chopra, who has expressed her pride for the project on Instagram following its Netflix release. The production involved Salaam Baalak Trust, Shine Global, Krushan Naik Films, and Mindy Kaling, highlighting a commitment to storytelling that matters.

If ‘Anuja’ clinches the award, it would be another feather in the cap for Monga, known for her previous wins with ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ and ‘Period: End of Sentence.’ This nomination is a testament to the global appeal and recognition of Indian cinema, showcasing stories that resonate universally while shedding light on local issues.

As the film industry celebrates this achievement, ‘Anuja’ stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the power of film to illuminate and inspire change in the darkest corners of human experience.
