Sandeep Reddy Vanga Sparks Controversy With Cryptic Post Following Deepika Padukone’s Exit from Spirit

Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has taken to social media to condemn what he described as “dirty PR games,” in what appears to be a veiled attack on actress Deepika Padukone following her exit from the upcoming film Spirit, starring Prabhas. Though Vanga did not mention Padukone by name, the timing and content of the post left little doubt about whom it was directed at.

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night, Vanga expressed disappointment over an unnamed actor allegedly disclosing parts of the film’s story and undermining a younger actor. The director also appeared to question the actor’s commitment to feminism and the film industry’s code of confidentiality.

“When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA between us… Putting down a younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for?” Vanga posted. He went on to say, “You didn’t get it. You won’t get it. You will never get it.”

He also added in Hindi, “Aisa karo… Agli baar poori kahani bolna… mujhe jarra bhi farak nahi padtha,” ending with the Hindi proverb “Khundak mein billi khamba noche” — loosely translating to “a cat scratches a pole in frustration.”

Reports over the past week claimed that Deepika Padukone had been removed from Spirit after disagreements over work hours, remuneration, and a share in the film’s profits. Sources indicated that Padukone, who recently became a mother, requested an eight-hour workday to balance her professional and personal life — a request reportedly not well-received by the production team.

The film would have marked her second collaboration with Prabhas after the upcoming Kalki 2898 AD.

Following Padukone’s departure, actress Triptii Dimri was officially announced as the new female lead of Spirit. On Saturday, she shared a title poster on social media in multiple languages and expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“Still sinking in… So grateful to be trusted with this journey. Thank you @sandeepreddy.vanga… Honoured to be a part of your vision,” she wrote.

While Deepika Padukone has yet to respond publicly to Vanga’s remarks, social media has been buzzing with speculation and debate. Some users supported Vanga’s right to creative expression, while others criticized the public airing of internal disputes.

Film trade analysts noted that such controversies, while damaging in the short term, often fuel curiosity and publicity for upcoming films.

Known for emotionally intense narratives, Sandeep Reddy Vanga rose to prominence with Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh, both of which sparked conversations around toxic masculinity and portrayal of relationships. His last directorial Animal was a commercial hit but also faced criticism over its gender dynamics.
