In a major twist in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, forensic reports reveal the fingerprints found in the actor’s Mumbai flat do not match with the main accused, Shariful Islam.

The Mumbai Police chargesheet in the stabbing case involving actor Saif Ali Khan has introduced a significant development: fingerprint samples lifted from inside the actor’s residence do not match those of the accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam.

Out of nearly 20 fingerprint samples sent to the Maharashtra CID’s Fingerprint Bureau, 19 did not match Shariful’s prints. These samples were collected from key locations within Khan’s flat, including a black bathroom door, the bedroom’s sliding door, and a cupboard. Only one matching fingerprint was found — on the eighth floor of the apartment building, raising further questions about the accused’s presence at the crime scene.

Despite the mismatch, Mumbai Police sources have clarified that fingerprint evidence is not always conclusive. “The chances of fingerprint matches are one in 1000 in shared spaces due to multiple contacts with the same surfaces,” said a police official.

Police argue that fingerprint evidence should be considered along with other forms of corroborative material, especially in high-traffic locations like residential buildings.

Filed last week in the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, the 1,000-page chargesheet includes a wide array of forensic evidence, including facial recognition results, an identification parade report, and forensic lab analysis.

The police also highlighted that the knife fragment retrieved from near Saif Ali Khan’s spine matched with the weapon recovered from Shariful Islam. This, they claim, is a critical piece of evidence tying the accused to the crime.

The stabbing occurred in the early hours of January 16. Reports indicate that Saif was attacked after he intervened upon hearing commotion in the room of his younger son Jeh. A female employee had reportedly been assaulted by the intruder, prompting the actor to step in.

The confrontation resulted in serious injuries to Saif, who was later hospitalised.

While the chargesheet forms a strong base for the prosecution, the absence of Shariful Islam’s fingerprints at the crime scene may become a key point of contention in court. Police maintain that the totality of the forensic evidence establishes the accused’s involvement.
