11 Killed, 4 Injured as Vehicle Plunges Into Canal in UP’s Gonda

At least 11 devotees were killed and four others sustained injuries on Sunday after their Bolero vehicle lost control and overturned into a canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district. The victims, all residents of the same village, were on their way to a temple for a religious offering when the tragic accident occurred.
The incident took place when the group of 15 people, hailing from Sihagaon village under the Motiganj police station area, were travelling to the Prithvi Nath Temple in Khargupur. As their vehicle approached the Saryu canal, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the Bolero to plunge into the water. The victims included men, women, and children who were travelling together for the pilgrimage.
According to local reports, passersby witnessed the vehicle falling into the canal and immediately alerted the Itiyathok police and the village head. A police team rushed to the location and initiated a rescue operation, recovering the bodies from the submerged vehicle. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the accident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced financial assistance. He directed officials to provide an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and to ensure that the injured receive all necessary medical care. The Chief Minister also instructed senior district officials to oversee the relief and rescue efforts at the site.
