20-Year-Old Woman Gang-Raped in Kolkata During Birthday Celebration, Accused Absconding
A 20-year-old woman has alleged that she was brutally gang-raped by two acquaintances in Kolkata during her birthday celebration on Friday, September 5, in a case that has once again cast a harsh spotlight on women’s safety in the city . The accused, identified as Chandan Mallick and Dwip (Deep) Biswas, are currently on the run, and police have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend them .
According to police sources, the survivor, a resident of Haridevpur, had met Mallick several months ago . Mallick, who allegedly presented himself as the head of a prominent South Kolkata Durga Puja committee, later introduced her to Biswas . The two men reportedly promised to involve her in the puja committee, and they began communicating frequently .
On the night of the incident, the accused allegedly took the woman to a flat in the upscale Regent Park area under the pretext of celebrating her birthday . After sharing a meal, the woman claims that when she tried to leave, the men locked the door, assaulted her, and then took turns raping her . She managed to escape the flat the following morning and returned home, after which she filed a formal complaint at the Haridevpur police station .
Police have registered an FIR and confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. “The FIR-named accused Chandan Mallick brought the complainant to the house of another accused, Dwip Biswas near Malancha, where both allegedly raped and assaulted her,” an official police statement said . Authorities are actively searching for the two absconding men and have urged the public to come forward with any information .
The shocking incident has reignited concerns over the safety of women in Kolkata, a city often lauded as one of the safest in India. This case comes just months after a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped on the South Calcutta Law College campus in June by three students and a security guard, an incident that prompted widespread protests and renewed scrutiny of safety measures in the city
