11 Dead, Several Trapped After Four-Storey Building Collapses in Delhi’s Mustafabad
At least 11 people died and multiple others are feared trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Mustafabad early Saturday morning, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
The tragic incident occurred around 2:50 am in the Mustafabad area. According to Delhi Police and fire department officials, the building was L-shaped and crumbled suddenly, as captured in chilling CCTV footage now circulating on social media.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, and Delhi Fire Service swiftly launched operations. So far, 14 individuals have been rescued from the debris, while 8 to 10 others are feared to be still trapped.
“We reached the spot and found the entire building collapsed. Rescue efforts are ongoing with the help of locals,” said Rajendra Atwal, Divisional Fire Officer.
Footage shared by news agency ANI shows the exact moment the structure collapsed, with clouds of dust engulfing the surroundings. In subsequent visuals, locals can be seen forming human chains and clearing debris alongside rescue officials.
“The situation is critical. We’ve rescued 14 so far, but time is of the essence as several people could still be buried under rubble,” said Additional DCP Sandeep Lamba of North East District.
The collapse followed a night of intense thunderstorms and rainfall across Delhi, which may have contributed to structural weakening. Authorities have not ruled out weather as a factor, though an official investigation is underway.
Earlier this week, a similar weather-linked incident occurred near Madhu Vihar police station, where a wall of an under-construction building gave way during a dust storm, killing one and injuring two others.
Local authorities have launched an inquiry into the structural integrity of the building and whether it had received all necessary clearances. Initial reports suggest it may have been illegally constructed or lacked proper maintenance.
“The priority remains saving lives. But we will ensure accountability once the rescue concludes,” a senior municipal official said.
Delhi government officials are expected to announce compensation for the victims’ families and initiate legal action against the builder if negligence is confirmed. Structural audits of nearby buildings may also be ordered in the aftermath.
More updates are awaited as the rescue operation continues.
