Air India offers interim ₹25 lakh as aid to crash victims’ families and survivor

Air India, part of the Tata Group, announced on Saturday that it will pay ₹25 lakh (₹2.5 million) to each family of those killed in the June 12 crash, and to the sole survivor. This interim payment comes in addition to a ₹1 crore support assured by Tata Sons, to help cover immediate needs while investigations continue.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, speaking from Ahmedabad, confirmed that the airline’s teams are working around the clock to assist victims’ families and promised to “remain present in Ahmedabad as long as it takes.” He issued the statement on X, emphasising the airline’s commitment to empathetic support and privacy for grieving families  .

Wilson also detailed that the airline is conducting precautionary safety inspections on its Boeing 787 fleet, following directives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). He further confirmed that the aircraft’s data recorder has been recovered and will form a key part of the official probe  .

The death toll from Air India Flight AI‑171 rose to 270, including 241 passengers and crew onboard and 29 individuals on the ground, among them several MBBS students and a postgraduate doctor  . Investigations into the Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner crash are focusing on engine thrust parameters, flap deployment and landing gear anomalies, as regulatory authorities carry out fleet-wide inspections of all 34 Boeing 787s in India  .

Air India has established assistance centres in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi and London, and opened a 24‑hour helpline to support families with logistics, counselling and documentation  .

The interim compensation package is a part of the broader ₹1.25 crore relief per victim. It includes the earlier announced ₹1 crore from Tata Sons and the new ₹25 lakh from Air India. Medical treatments for the injured are also being fully covered  .

As forensic teams continue DNA and dental record analyses to identify the victims, the Home Secretary‑led high‑level committee is conducting a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the catastrophe
