Anna University Sexual Assault Case Sparks Political Row, BJP Accuses DMK

The recent sexual assault case on Anna University’s campus in Chennai has triggered a massive political storm in Tamil Nadu. On December 23, a 19-year-old student was sexually assaulted, and her male friend attacked by two unidentified men within the university premises. The incident, reported on Tuesday following a police complaint by the victim, has led to widespread outrage and political accusations.
Accusations Against DMK and Political Allegations
Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai alleged that one of the accused, Gnanasekaran, is affiliated with the ruling DMK. He holds the position of deputy organizer of the Saidai East student wing. Annamalai shared photographs of the accused with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. He claimed that the accused is a repeat offender. This individual is protected by political connections.
He further alleged a systemic issue within the state. He accused DMK of sheltering criminals. They influence police investigations to avoid charges against their members.
DMK Responds to Allegations
In response, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathi clarified that the accused is not a primary member of the DMK. Addressing the photographs, the minister stated that such images do not establish close ties. He emphasized that the accused was swiftly arrested within hours of the incident.
He assured that the government has nothing to hide and pointed to police efficiency in handling the case.
AIADMK Criticizes the Ruling Party
The opposition AIADMK joined the chorus, accusing DMK of fostering anti-social elements. Leader of the Opposition E Palaniswami called DMK a “den of anti-social elements.” Meanwhile, AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan accused the police of attempting to cover up the case.
Reports of non-functional CCTV cameras on campus have fueled suspicions about security lapses. Police claim they arrested the accused using available footage.
Security Measures Under Review
In light of the incident, a joint security review by Greater Chennai Police and Anna University officials has been announced. Authorities aim to enhance campus security to ensure the safety of students.
The accused, who reportedly sold biryani near the university gates, is now in judicial custody for 15 days. Investigations are ongoing to determine his involvement in other crimes.
Conclusion
The Anna University case underscores the pressing need for stringent security measures and unbiased investigations into campus crimes. The political blame game highlights the polarization of public discourse in Tamil Nadu. As police and university officials work to improve safety, citizens demand accountability and justice for the victims.
