‘Attack On Democracy Single Biggest Risk’: Rahul Gandhi’s Colombia Comments Draw BJP Backlash
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again sparked a major political controversy, stating that the “attack on democracy in India” is the “single biggest risk” facing the nation, a comment that immediately drew a fierce backlash from the BJP. Speaking during an interaction at Colombia’s EIA University, the Leader of Opposition’s remarks were slammed by the ruling party as another attempt to “defame the country” on foreign soil.During the event, Gandhi argued that India’s strength lies in its democratic structure, which allows its diverse population of multiple religions, languages, and traditions to have a “conversation.”
He then alleged, “Currently, there is a wholesale attack on that democratic system in India.” Drawing a sharp contrast with China, he asserted that India, with its inherent diversity, “cannot afford to be like China,” which he described as having an oppressive and authoritarian system. “Our design will not accept that,” he said. The BJP responded swiftly and sharply. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla labeled Gandhi the “Leader of Propaganda” and accused him of habitually attacking Indian democracy while abroad. “Once again Rahul Gandhi behaves like LoP – Leader of Propaganda.
Goes abroad and attacks Indian Democracy! After all he wants to fight Indian state!” Poonawalla wrote on X, referencing past instances where he claimed Gandhi sought foreign intervention in India’s affairs.Echoing this sentiment, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal told reporters that it has “become a habit for Rahul Gandhi to defame the country’s constitutional institutions abroad.”
He added that the people of India do not approve of such behaviour. The exchange marks the latest flashpoint in the ongoing political battle between the Congress leader and the ruling BJP over the health and state of India’s democratic institutions.
