BJP Urges Citizens, Workers to Join May 7 Nationwide Mock Drills Amid Pakistan Tensions

In the wake of heightened India-Pakistan tensions, the BJP has appealed to citizens and party workers to participate in May 7’s nationwide mock drills aimed at testing civil defence preparedness.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday urged its leaders, workers, and the general public to actively join and support the May 7 civil defence mock drills, which are being held across 259 locations nationwide. These drills, directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), are part of a coordinated effort to bolster India’s readiness against modern and complex threats following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

In a social media post, the BJP encouraged volunteers to contribute to the exercises, calling participation a “difference-maker” in strengthening national preparedness. “Appeal to all citizens, BJP karyakartas and leaders to come forward and volunteer,” the party said.

The drills will include the simulation of air raid sirens, blackout scenarios, evacuation rehearsals, and the activation of shadow control rooms. Emergency communication systems like hotlines and radio links with the Indian Air Force (IAF) will also be tested.

Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is overseeing preparations, with a special focus on public awareness, civil defence coordination, and operational readiness of bunkers and shelters.

The MHA issued a directive to all states last week instructing them to hold mock security drills to evaluate response capacity in the event of a hostile attack. The order follows the terror assault in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives and is being linked to Pakistan-based groups.

Sources in the Home Ministry said the drills are designed to “refresh and rehearse” India’s civil defence infrastructure—particularly in high-risk regions such as border states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed severe retribution against those behind the Pahalgam attack, stating they will be hunted to the “ends of the earth.” The Prime Minister’s visit to Kashmir, initially scheduled for April 19, was postponed amid intelligence warnings and rising cross-border tensions.

The May 7 drills mark the first such nationwide preparedness initiative since 1971, underscoring the government’s emphasis on public awareness and coordinated response. With political and civilian backing, officials believe the exercises will enhance India’s resilience against evolving security threats.
