British F‑35 Fighter Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Thiruvananthapuram Due to Low Fuel

A British F‑35B stealth fighter made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Saturday at around 9:30 PM due to critically low fuel, according to PTI and airport sources The aircraft diverted after failing to return to its carrier amid poor sea and weather conditions.

Airport authorities declared an emergency to clear the runway, mobilise rescue teams, and facilitate a swift landing. “The pilot reported low fuel and asked for permission to land. Everything was handled quickly and professionally,” officials said. The jet is currently parked at the airport, awaiting central government clearance for refuelling.

Believed to have been operating from HMS Prince of Wales in the Indian Ocean, the fighter failed to land back on the carrier—likely due to turbulence or adverse weather—which prompted the diversion. Indian Air Force and civil aviation teams coordinated the emergency, while UK defence personnel maintained contact with local authorities for a smooth operation.

This rare incident highlights the close military-to-military cooperation between India and the UK during joint deployments and drills. Once clearance is obtained, the jet is expected to refuel and return to its carrier.
