Centre Raises Flags Concern Over Elon Musk’s X Chatbot Grok’s Controversial Replies

The Indian government has flagged concerns with X over its AI chatbot Grok’s unfiltered responses, seeking clarity on the data used for training and its use of abusive language, reports said on Wednesday.

On March 19, 2025, the central government contacted X to address issues with its AI chatbot Grok, known for generating controversial and unfiltered replies. The Ministry of Information and Technology is investigating the chatbot’s responses, particularly its use of Hindi slang and abusive language.

Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has gained attention in India for its blunt and often erratic replies on X. The chatbot’s unfiltered approach has stunned users and ignited discussions on social media about the role and ethics of AI in public interactions.

In one instance, a user asking for their “10 best mutuals” received a delayed, slur-laden reply after 16 hours, mirroring the user’s abusive tone. Another user, comparing Grok to ChatGPT, faced a defensive response filled with insults after using derogatory language.

Sources told PTI, “We are in touch, we are talking to them (X) to find out why it is happening and what are the issues. They are engaging with us.” The government has sought details on Grok’s training data and the reasons behind its controversial outputs.

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, the government has formally requested an explanation from X regarding Grok’s responses and the data used to train the chatbot. However, specific problematic replies were not detailed in the report.

The recently launched Grok 3, an advanced version of its predecessor Grok 2, was released last month after an anticipated debut in late 2024. It is designed to provide candid and human-like responses but has drawn scrutiny for its lack of filters.

The chatbot’s casual and sometimes offensive tone has left users both amused and concerned. Social media debates have emerged, questioning the future of AI in maintaining respectful and ethical communication online.

The Ministry of Information and Technology awaits X’s response to its queries. Further discussions and potential regulatory actions may follow, depending on the findings of the ongoing engagement with the platform.
