Centre to Launch ‘Umeed’ Portal for Waqf Property Registration on June 6
The central government will launch the ‘Umeed’ portal on June 6 to streamline the registration and management of Waqf properties across India, officials said on Monday. The initiative aims to ensure transparency, standardised documentation, and effective governance of Waqf assets under the recently amended Waqf Act.
The portal will act as a centralised platform for the registration of all Waqf properties across the country, with a mandatory registration deadline of six months from the launch date. Properties not registered within this timeframe may be considered disputed and referred to Waqf Tribunals for resolution.
Sources in the Minority Affairs Ministry said the portal will require detailed property descriptions, including geotagged coordinates, dimensions, and legal documents. State Waqf Boards will be tasked with facilitating the registrations.
“Properties under women’s names will not be eligible for Waqf declaration,” an official source clarified, adding that the intended beneficiaries of Waqf assets remain women, children, and economically weaker sections.
In case of technical or valid logistical reasons, the deadline may be extended by one or two months. However, repeated delays will lead to automatic referral of unregistered properties to the concerned tribunal.
The launch follows the recent passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which received presidential assent on April 5 after a heated debate in Parliament.
The government maintains that the legislation, including the portal, is aimed at improving accountability and reducing misuse of Waqf assets.
Meanwhile, multiple petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Act are still pending before the Supreme Court. The Centre has urged the apex court to dismiss them, arguing that the law does not infringe on fundamental rights.
On April 17, the court declined to stay the amended law after the government assured it would not enforce certain provisions temporarily. In the latest hearing on May 27, the court sought detailed responses from the Centre and other stakeholders.
The launch of ‘Umeed’ is expected to significantly reshape the way Waqf assets — often valued in thousands of crores — are identified, recorded, and managed in India.
