Congress Asks Leaders to Stick to Party Line on Pahalgam Attack Amid Controversy
The Congress has instructed its leaders to refrain from making statements that deviate from the party’s official stand on the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, sources said on Monday.
In the wake of controversial statements by some of its members, Congress has asked all leaders to strictly align with the party’s position regarding the Pahalgam terror attack, party sources confirmed. “Do not make statements deviating from the party line on the Pahalgam issue,” the directive reportedly stated.
The move comes as the BJP launched a scathing attack on Congress leaders whose comments were seized upon by Pakistani media outlets.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah found himself at the center of the controversy after remarking, “there is no need for war now,” in response to the terror strike. Facing criticism, Siddaramaiah later clarified, “I never said there should be no war with Pakistan; if a war is inevitable, it will happen.”
The BJP quickly pounced on the remarks, labeling Siddaramaiah as “Pakistan Ratna.” His comments were also prominently covered by Pakistani news channels, adding to the storm.
A Maharashtra Congress leader further inflamed tensions by questioning the government’s version of events surrounding the attack. Speaking to media, he said, “Terrorists have no caste or religion. Identify those responsible and take appropriate action. This is the sentiment of the country,” implying skepticism over reports that terrorists singled out victims based on their faith.
Congress sources said these divergent remarks risk undermining the party’s position at a sensitive time.
The Congress has often accused the BJP of politicizing terror attacks. However, incidents like these place the party in a delicate position, especially as it seeks to present a united front on national security issues. Party leaders have been instructed to exercise caution while speaking on the Pahalgam incident.
Congress is expected to internally brief its spokespersons and key leaders on handling queries related to the Pahalgam attack. Party leaders have been warned that any future deviation from the party line will invite disciplinary action, sources added.
