'Crocodile Tears' Supreme Court Orders SIT Probe Into MP Minister’s Remarks

In a stern rebuke to Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into his controversial remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who recently represented the Army during media briefings on Operation Sindoor

The top court rejected Shah’s video apology, calling it an attempt to escape accountability for calling Col Qureshi a “sister of terrorists.” The bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, said the comments were not only “crass” but made “thoughtlessly” by a seasoned public figure.

“You are a public figure. A seasoned politician. You should weigh your words,” said Justice Kant. “Where is the sincerity in your apology? These are crocodile tears.”

The court was visibly critical of Shah’s conduct, questioning the authenticity of his apology video. “Have you even watched the video? People’s sentiments have been ruthlessly hurt. This isn’t just about you, it’s about what you represent,” Justice Kant told Shah.

The bench said that an SIT comprising three senior IPS officers, including one woman officer, will investigate the matter. While Shah’s arrest has been stayed, he has been directed to fully cooperate with the probe.

“The entire nation is ashamed of you. It is up to you how you redeem yourself,” the bench remarked.

The Supreme Court also upheld the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s decision to file an FIR against Shah. It further directed that the SIT file its first report during the court’s upcoming vacation session.

Justice Kant made it clear that the court wasn’t ordering Shah’s arrest but was instead ensuring a fair and transparent investigation under judicial oversight.

The minister’s remarks have drawn widespread condemnation on social media. Many users praised the Supreme Court for taking a firm stand, with hashtags like #JusticeForColSofiya and #SCSlamsShah trending on X (formerly Twitter).

Several veterans and women’s groups have also spoken out, calling Shah’s remarks an insult to every uniformed officer serving the country.

Col Sofiya Qureshi is a decorated officer of the Indian Army who has served in key strategic roles. She recently made headlines as the face of India’s Operation Sindoor media briefings — a mission that showcased India’s rapid response and humanitarian operations.

In the past, Col Qureshi also became the first woman officer to lead a foreign military contingent in the Republic Day parade, representing India’s growing gender diversity in the armed forces.
