7 Dead, Including 2 Children, as Wall Collapses in Delhi Amid Heavy Rains

Tragedy struck the national capital on Saturday as seven people, including two young children, were killed after a wall collapsed in south-east Delhi’s Jaitpur area amid relentless heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred in Hari Nagar, where the wall of an old temple gave way, burying residents of adjoining shanties under the debris.Eight people living in the jhuggis were trapped in the collapse. A rescue operation was swiftly launched, and the injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS for urgent medical attention. Despite the efforts, seven individuals succumbed to their injuries during treatment. One person, identified as Hashibul, remains in critical condition.

The deceased have been identified as Shabibul (30), Rabibul (30), Muttu Ali (45), Rubina (25), Dolly (25), and two children, Rukhsana (6) and Hasina (7). In the aftermath, police have evacuated the remaining jhuggis as a precautionary measure. “There is an old temple here, and next to it are old jhuggies where scrap dealers live. The wall collapsed due to heavy rain overnight. We have now evacuated these jhuggies so that no such incidents occur in future,” said senior police officer Aishwarya Sharma.

The devastating collapse followed a night of incessant, heavy downpours that battered Delhi, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city for Saturday.
