BJP Delhi CM Name Yet To be Announced But Oath Invitation Already Out

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is finally putting an end to the suspense surrounding Delhi’s new Chief Minister. After a stunning victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the February 5, 2025, Assembly polls, the BJP, which won 48 out of 70 seats, is set to name its CM candidate today, February 19, 2025. This marks the party’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years, and the excitement is palpable as preparations for tomorrow’s swearing-in ceremony at the iconic Ramlila Maidan are nearly complete.

The announcement will happen during a legislative party meeting at the BJP’s Delhi unit office this evening. Once the new CM is chosen, they will meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to stake claim to form the government. The delay in naming the CM was partly due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trips to France and the US, but now, with Modi expected to attend the key meeting, things are moving fast. The BJP’s Parliamentary Board met at noon today to appoint observers for the meeting, ensuring a smooth decision-making process.

Who could the new Delhi CM be? Names like Parvesh Verma, who famously defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi, former Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, Rekha Gupta, Ashish Sood, Satish Upadhyay, and Jitender Mahajan are buzzing around. Verma’s win over Kejriwal has made him a top contender, but the BJP might surprise everyone, as it has in other states.

At Ramlila Maidan, preparations are in full swing for a grand oath-taking ceremony scheduled for tomorrow at around 12 pm. Three stages have been set up: the main stage will host PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and LG Saxena, while religious leaders will sit on the second stage, and current MPs and MLAs on the third. Even film stars have been given spots below the stage, adding glamour to the event. The ceremony will wrap up by 1 pm, with the Lt. Governor administering oaths to the CM-designate at 12:35 pm and ministers at 12:45 pm. Invitations have gone out to AAP’s Kejriwal and caretaker CM Atishi, showing a touch of protocol despite the political rivalry.

Security is tight, with Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and senior officers reviewing arrangements at Ramlila Maidan. Over 5,000 personnel, including paramilitary forces, will ensure safety and manage traffic. However, some BJP-ruled state Chief Ministers, like those from Gujarat, might miss the event due to budget presentations back home.
