Cash Found At Delhi HC Judge’s Home, SC Collegium Orders Transfer of Justice Verma
The Supreme Court Collegium has decided to transfer Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Verma back to Allahabad after unaccounted cash was found at his official residence following a fire, triggering an emergency meeting on Thursday.
On March 14, 2025, a fire broke out at Justice Yashwant Verma’s bungalow on Tughlak Road, Delhi, around 11:30 PM. With Verma out of the city, his family alerted the fire brigade and police, who discovered a large amount of cash while extinguishing the blaze.
Delhi Police quickly informed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) about the cash recovery. The MHA forwarded a report to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, prompting swift action from the Supreme Court Collegium.
The Collegium, led by CJI Khanna, met on March 20 and resolved to transfer Justice Verma back to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court. Sources say the CJI viewed the incident as a serious breach, necessitating the move.

Beyond the transfer, the Collegium is also contemplating an in-house inquiry against Justice Verma. This follows established 1999 Supreme Court guidelines for addressing judicial misconduct allegations.
As per the 1999 protocol, the CJI seeks a response from the accused judge upon receiving a complaint. If unsatisfied, an internal committee may be formed, potentially recommending resignation if grave misconduct is found.
Justice Verma joined the Delhi High Court in October 2021 from Allahabad. The cash discovery has now cast a shadow over his tenure, leading to his return to his original court.
The Collegium’s final decision on an inquiry remains pending, with further actions hinging on Justice Verma’s response. The incident has raised questions about judicial accountability, and updates are expected soon.
