Delhi Gets Rs 11,000 Crore Infra Boost as PM Modi Opens Two Key Highways to Decongest Capital

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major highway projects in Delhi, built at a combined cost of nearly Rs 11,000 crore, in a significant push by the central government to decongest the capital and enhance connectivity across the National Capital Region . The newly opened arteries are the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and a critical stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), which are expected to drastically cut travel times and ease traffic snarls on major city roads .

Before the inauguration ceremony in Rohini, the Prime Minister held a mega roadshow and reviewed the projects on-site . The Prime Minister’s Office stated that “these initiatives reflect Prime Minister Modi’s vision of creating world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility” . The event was attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, among other leaders .

The 10.1-km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway, developed for about Rs 5,360 crore, will offer crucial multi-modal connectivity to the Yashobhoomi convention center, the Delhi Metro’s Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka cluster bus depot . This section connects the Shiv Murti intersection to the Delhi-Haryana border via Dwarka Sector-21, linking directly with UER-II and complementing the Haryana portion of the expressway that the Prime Minister inaugurated in March 2024 .

The second project unveiled was the Alipur–Dichaon Kalan stretch of UER-II, along with its new spurs to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, built for approximately Rs 5,580 crore . This corridor is designed to divert heavy traffic from Delhi’s perpetually congested Inner and Outer Ring Roads and alleviate bottlenecks at key points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09, thereby improving industrial connectivity and goods movement in the region . In light of the VVIP program, Delhi Traffic Police had implemented significant traffic restrictions in parts of West Delhi and Rohini, advising commuters to plan their journeys and use the Delhi Metro where possible
