Delhi-NCR Shaken by 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake: Residents Feel Strong Tremors, No Damage Reported

Early Monday morning, the residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were jolted awake by unexpected tremors. A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck with its epicenter near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in south Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake occurred at a shallow depth of five kilometers at 5:36 am.

The tremors were brief but strong enough to cause panic, leading many to rush out of their homes. Despite the intensity of the shaking, no immediate reports of damage or injuries emerged. Social media platforms buzzed with residents sharing their experiences, with posts like “Earthquake?” from BJP leader Tajinder Singh Bagga and prayers for safety from political figures like Congress leader Alka Lamba and Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister Atishi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to urge calmness among the public, advising them to stay alert for potential aftershocks. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” he stated. The Delhi Police responded promptly, encouraging residents to call emergency services if needed.

Delhi-NCR is situated in Seismic Zone IV, indicating a significant risk for moderate to strong earthquakes. The area around Dhaula Kuan, which has a lake nearby, has seen smaller seismic activities, with the last notable event being a 3.3 magnitude quake in 2015. This recent event was accompanied by a loud sound, which is not uncommon during earthquakes.

Earthquakes, though not daily occurrences, are reminders of the region’s vulnerability. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety protocols, such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” and to secure heavy furniture and objects that could fall during a quake. Awareness of emergency exits, having emergency kits ready, and knowing how to shut off gas and water lines are also crucial steps to enhance safety.

While this earthquake did not cause any reported damage, it serves as a wake-up call to be prepared. The community’s response, from political leaders to everyday citizens, shows a collective concern and readiness to support each other in times of need. Let’s hope for everyone’s continued safety and remain vigilant.
