Delhi Police Vehicle Crushes Tea Stall Vendor, Locals Allege Cops Were Drunk
A tea stall vendor was killed after a Delhi Police PCR van ran him over in the city’s Gole Market area early on Thursday morning . The victim, identified as 50-year-old Ganga Ram Tiwari, was reportedly asleep at his stall when the police vehicle mounted a roadside ramp and crushed him . Locals at the scene have alleged that the police personnel in the vehicle were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Tiwari, who had been running his tea stall near the Ram Krishna Ashram Metro Station for the last decade, was killed on the spot . A senior police official confirmed that a crime team is at the scene, and CCTV footage from the area is being examined to determine the circumstances of the crash .
The two police personnel involved, an assistant sub-inspector and a constable, have been suspended pending a medical examination and further investigation . A case is being registered in the matter. Additional DCP (New Delhi) Hukma Ram described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured that the police would take action as per the law.
“We will provide all possible help to the family of the deceased, and compensation will be provided,” he told news agency ANI . The victim’s body has been sent to a nearby hospital for a post-mortem examination. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
