Delhi Shivers: Cold Wave & Dense Fog Set to Disrupt New Year Plans
As the rainy spell subsides, Delhi and neighboring regions brace for a cold wave and dense fog in the days leading up to the New Year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings about significant drops in temperature and visibility, urging residents and travelers to prepare for challenging weather conditions.
The IMD predicts a sharp decline in minimum temperatures over the next few days. In Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan, temperatures are expected to drop by 3–4°C through December 30, stabilizing afterward. Uttar Pradesh will see a more pronounced dip of 4–6°C over five days, while central India faces a 3–5°C drop after an initial period of steadiness. Even east India and Maharashtra will not be spared, with temperatures dropping by 3–4°C and 2–4°C, respectively.
Severe cold wave conditions are expected for isolated areas in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. This forecast is valid from December 30 to January 2. These areas are likely to experience biting cold, with minimum temperatures plummeting significantly below normal levels.
The plunge in temperatures will be accompanied by dense to very dense fog during late-night and early-morning hours. The IMD has issued specific warnings for Uttar Pradesh on December 30 and Himachal Pradesh through January 1. In the northeast, states like Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will face persistent fog. This condition is expected until January 2.
The dense fog is expected to reduce visibility, affecting road, rail, and air travel. Authorities advise commuters to exercise caution, especially during early mornings and late evenings, when visibility will be at its lowest. Residents are encouraged to stay warm, limit outdoor activities, and take necessary precautions to protect against the cold.
