Drunk Audi Driver Runs Over Five Sleeping on Delhi Footpath, Arrested

A drunk driver in a white Audi ran over five people, including an eight-year-old girl, as they slept on a footpath near Shiva Camp in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar early Tuesday, police said. The accused, identified as 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar from Dwarka, was arrested at the scene.
The incident took place around 1:45 am near the Indian Oil petrol pump in the area. Police said Shekhar’s medical report confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
The victims, all from Rajasthan, were identified as Ladhi (40), her daughter Bimla (8), her husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), Ram Chander (45), and his wife Narayani (35). They were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment after sustaining injuries in the incident.
According to initial investigations and eyewitness statements, the speeding Audi veered off the road and ploughed into the victims who were sleeping on the footpath. Police teams reached the spot shortly after receiving a PCR call and secured the area as the injured were moved to hospital.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) said a case has been registered, and legal action against the driver has been initiated. “The accused has been taken into custody, and the vehicle involved has been seized,” the official said, adding that further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events.
The incident has sparked concerns over repeated cases of drunk driving in the capital, with many taking to social media demanding stricter checks on late-night drunk driving in Delhi-NCR.
Officials said statements from the victims will be recorded once their medical condition stabilises to add further clarity to the investigation.
