Heavy and incessant rainfall lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region on Wednesday evening, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls, and prompting airlines and the Delhi international airport to issue advisories for passengers.

The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, in an advisory, stated that despite the “inclement weather conditions,” all flight operations are “currently normal.” However, anticipating travel disruptions on the roads, the airport has advised passengers to consider using the Delhi Metro to reach the airport and avoid potential delays.

Budget carrier SpiceJet also issued a warning to its passengers. “Due to bad weather in Delhi (DEL), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status,” the airline said in a post on X.

The heavy downpour, which hit Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, submerged several key arterial roads. Visuals from across the capital showed commuters wading through flooded streets, leading to slow-moving traffic and long jams during the evening hours. Areas like GRG Road and BD Marg were among those reporting significant waterlogging issues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for more light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning through the night. The weather office has also predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain for Thursday, suggesting that the wet spell is likely to continue.

On Wednesday, the capital recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius. The air quality remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category with an AQI of 81, largely due to the rain washing away pollutants.
