Delhi witnessed a historic moment on February 20, 2025, as Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi. This marks the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) triumphant return to power in the capital after 27 long years. Gupta, now the fourth woman to lead Delhi—following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi—stepped into the spotlight at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top BJP leaders. Let’s dive into this big day and what it means for Delhi!

Rekha Gupta: Delhi’s New Leader

At 50, Rekha Gupta brings a fresh yet experienced face to Delhi’s leadership. She won the Shalimar Bagh seat in the February 5, 2025, Delhi Assembly elections, beating Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes. Her campaign tagline, “Kaam hi Pehchaan” (my work is my identity), reflects her focus on action over words. Starting as a Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president and later serving as a municipal councillor, Gupta’s journey shows her grassroots grit. On Wednesday, BJP MLAs chose her as their leader, and she staked her claim to form the government with Lt. Governor VK Saxena’s approval.

A Star-Studded Oath Ceremony

The swearing-in at Ramlila Maidan was nothing short of a spectacle. PM Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states joined the celebration, showcasing the party’s unity and strength. Gupta’s cabinet—Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, and Ravinder Indraj—also took the oath, promising a “double-engine” government to fast-track Delhi’s growth. With over 30,000 guests, including party workers and NDA allies, the event doubled as a victory lap for BJP’s landslide win of 48 out of 70 seats, ending AAP’s decade-long rule.

Speaking to Aaj Tak before the ceremony, Gupta credited PM Modi’s vision of women’s empowerment for her rise. “Choosing a middle-class woman like me for this role shows Modi ji’s trust in us,” she said. She vowed to work tirelessly, promising to fulfill BJP’s election pledges—like Rs 2,500 monthly aid for women and Rs 21,000 for pregnant women. Gupta also took a swipe at the “previous corrupt government,” hinting at holding AAP accountable for every rupee spent. Her words struck a chord with Delhiites eager for change after 10 years of AAP governance.

BJP’s Comeback Strategy

The BJP’s return wasn’t just luck—it was a plan. The party wooed women voters with big promises, outdoing AAP’s Rs 2,100 monthly aid offer with a Rs 2,500 scheme. Names like Parvesh Verma (who defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal) and Vijender Gupta were in the CM race, but Rekha’s low-key yet solid track record won out. As the only woman CM in a BJP-ruled state today, she’s a symbol of the party’s push for female leadership. After the oath, an NDA meeting with Modi and Shah signaled more big plans for Delhi’s future.

What’s Next for Delhi?

Gupta’s leadership kicks off a new chapter. She’s not just the fourth woman CM of Delhi but also the fourth from BJP, joining legends like Madan Lal Khurana and Sushma Swaraj. With a strong team and Modi’s backing, she’s set to tackle Delhi’s challenges—think cleaner streets, better jobs, and women’s welfare. Will she deliver? Delhi’s watching, and so are we!
