National-level tennis player Radhika Yadav, 25, was allegedly shot dead by her father, Deepak Yadav, at their home in Gurugram’s Sector 57 on Thursday morning. The shocking incident, which occurred around 10:30 am, stemmed from the father’s reported distress over villagers’ taunts concerning his daughter’s income and character, as well as an ongoing dispute regarding her refusal to shut down her tennis academy.

Deepak Yadav has confessed to the crime during an on-spot interrogation by Gurugram police and has been arrested. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed on the complaint of Radhika’s uncle, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak was vehemently against his daughter continuing the academy despite her repeated refusal to close it.

The tragic event unfolded on the first floor of their residence. Radhika was in the kitchen, preparing food, when her father allegedly fired three bullets from his licensed .32 bore revolver, critically injuring her from behind. She was immediately rushed to Asia Maringo Hospital by her uncle and cousin, but was declared dead upon arrival.
Radhika Yadav was a promising athlete who had played tennis at the national level and won several trophies. After sustaining a shoulder injury during a match, she transitioned to coaching, establishing a tennis academy for children.

Deepak Yadav reportedly told police he was unable to cope with the “insult” and pressure from taunts suggesting he was living off his daughter’s earnings and questioning her character. This perceived humiliation, he claimed, led him to take out his revolver and shoot her.
At the time of the incident, only Deepak, Radhika, and her mother Manju Yadav were present in the house. Their son, Dheeraj, was at his property dealer’s office. Kuldeep Yadav and his son Piyush, who reside on the ground floor, rushed upstairs after hearing the gunshots, discovering Radhika in a pool of blood in the kitchen. The revolver was found on a drawing room table, containing five empty shells and one live cartridge.

Kuldeep Yadav, in his statement to the police, expressed shock at the murder, stating he had no prior indication of such an intention from his brother. He confirmed that the revolver used in the crime was known to the family.
Radhika’s mother, Manju Yadav, informed police she was in her room due to fever and only heard the gunshots. She claimed no knowledge of what triggered the act and denied any serious dispute between her husband and daughter, asserting Radhika had a good character and had never brought disrepute to the family.

Gurugram police have seized the revolver, blood samples, and swabs from the crime scene as evidence. Fingerprint experts were also called in. A case has been registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with punishment for murder, and relevant provisions of the Arms Act. Further investigations are underway.
