Firing Inside Patna Hospital: Murder Accused Chandan Mishra Shot by Rival Gang, Security Concerns Mount

A chilling daylight shooting inside Patna’s Paras Hospital on Thursday has left murder-accused Chandan Mishra critically injured, raising urgent questions about security at medical facilities and Bihar’s escalating gang violence crisis. Around 7:30 AM, five unidentified assailants armed with pistols burst into the hospital’s second-floor room and opened fire on Mishra, who was out on parole for medical treatment.

CCTV footage from the hospital shows the armed men casually entering room 209, firing multiple rounds at Mishra before fleeing the scene, reportedly on motorcycles. The attackers escaped before security or police could respond. No other patients, staff, or visitors were reported injured, but the violence caused widespread panic inside the hospital.

Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar with at least ten murder cases against him, had been shifted from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail and was on a 15-day medical parole. He is a history-sheeter with known ties to organized crime in the region. Patna’s Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma confirmed that the attack is believed to be a result of ongoing gang rivalry—involving the so-called Chandan Sheru gang—adding that photographs and CCTV images of the shooters are now with the police, and a state-wide manhunt has been launched with assistance from Buxar Police.

Officials are also examining whether hospital security personnel were complicit or simply caught off guard. “It cannot be ruled out that the security guards were involved. We will investigate this angle as well,” Central Range Inspector General Jitendra Rana told reporters. The incident has triggered widespread fear, with security arrangements at Patna’s prominent hospitals now under scrutiny.

The shooting, occurring just five kilometers from the Chief Minister’s residence, has drawn sharp criticism from Bihar’s opposition. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav posted on X, “Criminals entered the ICU and shot a patient. Is anyone safe in Bihar?” while MP Pappu Yadav called for President’s Rule, citing a “collapse” of law and order. Recent days have witnessed a series of high-profile murders in the capital, including those of industrialists and political figures, fueling anxiety about unchecked crime.

Police are continuing to search the city for the culprits. Initial investigations point to possible inside help, given how easily the gunmen located and accessed the targeted room inside the hospital. A special “Shooter Cell” was recently announced by Bihar police to track notorious criminals, but today’s attack underlines the challenges authorities face in curbing organized violence.
