First Batch of Apache Attack Helicopters for Indian Army Arrives From US

The first consignment of advanced AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for the Indian Army landed at the Hindon Airbase on Tuesday, marking a significant boost to the force’s combat aviation capabilities.

The helicopters, acquired from the United States, will now undergo assembly and a Joint Receipt Inspection (JRI) before their formal induction into the Army Aviation Corps, sources confirmed.

This delivery is part of a contract for six Apache helicopters for the Indian Army, which raised its first squadron of these formidable attack choppers in Jodhpur on March 15 this year. The delivery had previously missed deadlines set for June and December 2024 due to supply chain issues.

Manufactured by US defence giant Boeing, the AH-64E Apache is widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced multi-role combat helicopters. It is operated by several nations, including the United States, the UK, and Israel.
The helicopter is armed with a powerful 30mm chain gun, laser- and radar-guided Hellfire missiles for precision strikes, and rocket pods. It also features the distinctive Longbow radar mounted above the main rotor, which allows it to detect and prioritise threats in hostile combat zones without direct exposure.

This induction is separate from the 22 Apache helicopters acquired for the Indian Air Force under a 2015 agreement.

The arrival of the Apaches is part of a broader push to modernise India’s aviation assets. Last year, the Defence Ministry also signed contracts worth over ₹8,000 crore for 34 indigenously-made Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv Mk III for the Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard.
