Fly with Just One Bag, Under 7kg – New Baggage Rules
Navigating the skies just got a bit more straightforward. However, there are new rules you’ll want to know about before you pack for your next flight. If you’re planning to travel by air, you should be aware of a recent update. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) issued this update. New Baggage Rules could affect how you pack.
One Bag Rule for All: The BCAS New Baggage Rules allows you to carry only one piece of hand baggage on board. Whether you’re jetting off domestically or internationally, this rule applies universally. Any additional bags? They’ll have to be checked in.
Weight and Size Limits: For most travelers, the new norm is a single carry-on weighing no more than 7 kilograms. Air India has set this limit for economy and premium economy passengers. A slightly higher allowance of 10 kg is given for first and business class. The dimensions shouldn’t exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm. The total maximum dimension across all airlines is 115 cm. Exceed these, and you might face additional charges.
Exemptions and Legacy Bookings: There’s a small silver lining for those who booked before May 2, 2024. You’re covered under the old policy. You could carry up to 8 kg in economy. In premium economy, you could carry 10 kg. In first or business class, you could carry 12 kg. However, any changes to your booking post-May 2 will align you with the new restrictions.
Airlines’ Specifics: Indigo Airlines adheres to the one cabin bag policy. The bag must have a maximum dimension of 115 cm. It also has a weight cap of 7 kg. They allow one additional personal item, like a small purse or laptop bag. This item must not exceed 3 kg. This policy provides a bit more flexibility for essentials.
This policy shift addresses the growing congestion at security checkpoints. It aims to streamline the process and enhance security. So, before your next flight, ensure you’ve packed accordingly to avoid any last-minute hitches at the airport.
