Goa on Red Alert, Heavy Rains Predicted in Mumbai; Delhi Likely to See Thunderstorms Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for Goa and parts of Konkan amid predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. Mumbai is under orange alert, with the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds. Delhi is likely to witness pre-monsoon showers on Saturday, as part of widespread storm activity across northern and southern India.

The IMD’s latest forecast covers multiple states, including Kerala, Assam, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Jharkhand, highlighting an intense weather pattern ahead of the monsoon onset.

The IMD has sounded a red alert for Goa, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall between May 23 and 25, with the most intense precipitation expected on May 25.

Authorities in these regions have urged residents to stay alert and shift to safer locations if needed.

An orange alert is in effect for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and parts of Pune and Satara ghats, with thunderstorms and winds up to 60 kmph expected.

The IMD forecast indicates widespread light to moderate rainfall over Konkan and Goa from May 23 to May 29.

Delhi is expected to see cloudy skies and possible thunderstorms on May 24, as pre-monsoon activity intensifies. Rain or thundershowers are also predicted for May 27, with thunder and lightning expected on May 25 and 26.

Heavy rainfall disrupted normal life in Kerala on Friday. A red alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram due to surface winds reaching 50 kmph.

The IMD has forecast monsoon onset in Kerala within two days. Coastal fishing is banned from May 24 to 27 along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast due to high sea activity and waves expected up to 3.5 meters, according to INCOIS.

Andhra Pradesh is bracing for five days of thunderstorms from May 23 to 27, with lightning and gusty winds reaching 60 kmph.

The state has already recorded ‘large excess’ rainfall with 88.5 mm between May 1 and 21—well above the 39.2 mm average.

In Jharkhand, widespread thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast until May 29, with maximum temperatures expected to remain below normal. An orange alert has been issued for southern, central, and northeastern parts of the state.

Officials have urged citizens to remain alert, especially in regions under red and orange alerts. The IMD’s forecast suggests intensifying pre-monsoon conditions, setting the stage for an active and potentially disruptive monsoon season across India.
