Historic Gold Coins with Ram, Sita & Lakshman Unearthed in Sambhal

In a fascinating turn of events, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) unearthed a treasure trove of history in Alipur Khurd village, Sambhal. During what started as a routine excavation, the sound of metal clinking against spades led to the discovery of an earthen pot filled with gold coins, some dating back 300-400 years.

SDM Vandana Mishra, overseeing the dig, revealed that among these coins were some from the British period, while others showcased detailed engravings of Ram, Sita, and Lakshman, underscoring the area’s deep religious and cultural heritage. This find not only adds to our understanding of the region’s history but also connects to the era of Guru Amarpati, a significant local historical figure.

Simultaneously, another layer of history was uncovered with the excavation of an ancient well near the Shahi Jama Masjid. This well, part of 19 known in the region, had been hidden under illegal encroachments for years. Its importance is twofold: it’s near the disputed Shahi Jama Masjid-Harihar temple site, a focal point of religious and political tension, and it holds a revered place in local customs, used for ceremonies like childbirth and weddings.

The well’s excavation has been prompted by local complaints about its condition and encroachments, with Assistant Superintendent of Police Shirish Chandra stating that legal actions will follow once the well’s restoration is complete. The effort to restore this well reflects a broader initiative to preserve Sambhal’s ancient heritage amidst ongoing local conflicts, including the recent violence sparked by the mosque’s survey in November.

These discoveries have ignited excitement among historians and locals alike, promising to unveil more about the cultural, religious, and economic life of the past. As the ASI continues its work, both the gold coins and the ancient well serve as poignant reminders of Sambhal’s rich historical tapestry, urging a deeper exploration into India’s diverse heritage.
