Goverment Allocates Memorial Space for Former PM Manmohan Singh After Congress Appeal
The Government has agreed to allocate space for a memorial honoring former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This decision came shortly after the Congress party expressed concerns over the absence of a designated site for his cremation and memorial.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) released a statement. It indicated that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had formally requested the allocation of space for Singh’s memorial. Following a Cabinet meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with Kharge and Singh’s family. He informed them that the government would provide the necessary space. The MHA noted that while the cremation could proceed as planned, establishing the memorial would require forming a trust. After that, there would need to be an allocation of space.
Earlier, the Congress party had raised concerns about the lack of a suitable location for Manmohan Singh cremation and memorial. They described it as a “deliberate insult” to India’s first Sikh Prime Minister. They highlighted Singh’s significant contributions to the nation. They also questioned the government’s inability to provide a befitting site for his final rites.

In response, the government clarified that space would be allocated for the memorial. This will occur after completing the necessary formalities. These formalities include the formation of a trust. Meanwhile, Singh’s last rites are scheduled to be conducted at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi with full state honors.
This situation has highlighted the sensitivities involved in honoring national leaders. It also underscores the importance of timely communication between political entities. This ensures that the legacies of such figures are appropriately commemorated.
