‘I Was Abducted’: Sonam Raghuvanshi Claims Innocence in Husband’s Murder After Arrest
In a dramatic new twist to the Indore couple murder mystery, Sonam Raghuvanshi, in her first statement since being arrested, has claimed she is innocent and was herself a victim of abduction. This comes as the Meghalaya Police have labelled her a “prime accused” in the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, alleging she hired his killers.
Sonam was arrested from an Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road in Uttar Pradesh in the wee hours of Monday, days after her husband’s body was found in a deep gorge in Meghalaya. The couple, who were on their honeymoon, had been reported missing on May 23.
According to police sources, Sonam has claimed she was abducted and later abandoned in Ghazipur, from where she called her brother for help. A staffer at the dhaba where she was found has reportedly confirmed to the media that a woman had arrived there late on June 8, was crying, and had asked to use a phone to call her family.
However, this narrative starkly contrasts with the police’s version of events. Addressing a press conference, the Meghalaya Police stated that Sonam is one of the prime accused in her husband’s murder. They had earlier alleged that she had hired contract killers to murder Raja. The police also claimed that Sonam had surrendered, a statement that has been refuted by Raja Raghuvanshi’s family.
The case has gripped the nation since the couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, went missing during their trip to the northeastern state. After days of intense searches, Raja’s body was recovered, while Sonam remained untraceable until her arrest in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Sonam’s family has vehemently denied the police’s claims of her involvement in the murder. They have also raised questions about the circumstances of her arrest and have demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the case to ensure a fair and impartial probe.
The conflicting claims have added new layers of complexity to the investigation. The Meghalaya Police are expected to seek Sonam’s transit remand to bring her to Shillong for further questioning as they work to uncover the full conspiracy behind the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi.
