IIM Calcutta Student Arrested For Allegedly Raping Woman In Boys' Hostel

A student of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman inside the boys’ hostel of the institute. The shocking incident, which reportedly took place on Friday, has once again raised serious questions about the safety of women on educational campuses in the city.

According to Kolkata Police, the woman filed an FIR at the Haridevpur Police Station late on Friday night. Based on her complaint, the accused student was detained overnight and formally arrested on Saturday morning.

In her complaint, the woman stated that she had become acquainted with the accused through social media and had visited him on Friday evening seeking advice on a personal matter. She was then taken to the boys’ hostel on the IIM Joka campus.

“The woman stated in the FIR that she was called to the hostel for a counselling session. She then became unconscious after consuming a drink laced with drugs at the hostel,” a senior police officer told news agency PTI. “The woman realised she had been raped after regaining consciousness.”

The complainant also alleged that the accused student had threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.

A police investigation into the case is now underway.

This disturbing case comes less than a month after the city was shaken by the alleged gang-rape of a student inside the security guard’s room at the South Calcutta Law College on June 25. The police have arrested four people, including the college security guard, in connection with that case. The incident at IIM-C, a premier business school, has further intensified concerns among students and citizens about the security measures in place at educational institutions across Kolkata.
