India Backs Trump-Putin Alaska Summit, Hopes for End to Ukraine War

India on Saturday officially welcomed the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing hope that the talks will pave the way for an end to the long-running war in Ukraine. The high-stakes meeting is scheduled to take place in Alaska on August 15, 2025, and is expected to focus on resolving the conflict that has now entered its fourth year.

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) lauded the diplomatic initiative. “India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15th August 2025. This meeting holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace,” the MEA said.

Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s consistent stance on the issue, the ministry added, “As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, ‘This is not an era of war’. India, therefore, endorses the upcoming Summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts.”

The confirmation of the summit came directly from President Trump, who announced the details on his social media platform, Truth Social, ending weeks of speculation about the venue. “The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday,

August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump wrote. While reports suggested President Putin had favored the United Arab Emirates as a location, the US administration is believed to have pushed for a domestic venue for security and diplomatic reasons.

This meeting marks the first official engagement between Trump and Putin since Trump began his second term in January 2025 and is the first formal US-Russia presidential summit since former President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021. While US officials have not yet released a detailed agenda, the Ukraine conflict is expected to be the central topic of discussion.
