India stepped up as a first responder on Saturday, launching ‘Operation Brahma’ to deliver nearly 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Myanmar, ravaged by two powerful earthquakes on Friday. An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft carrying essential supplies landed in Yangon, marking the beginning of India’s relief efforts for its quake-stricken neighbour.

The relief mission follows devastating earthquakes of 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude that struck Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The Indian Air Force plane took off from Hindon air force station, transporting critical items to support survivors in the affected regions.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed the aid’s arrival, sharing visuals on X and stating, “#OperationBrahma gets underway. First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar.”

The 15-tonne consignment includes tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, and generator sets. Medical supplies such as paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages were also dispatched to address immediate healthcare needs. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India’s role, saying, “Operation Brahma – India acts as a First Responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday’s massive earthquake.”

Friday’s quakes, centered near Mandalay, toppled buildings, bridges, and historic structures, with Myanmar’s junta reporting significant casualties. The tremors also affected Thailand, prompting India to extend its assistance offer to both countries. The aid package aims to address immediate needs like shelter, food, and medical care in Myanmar’s hardest-hit areas.

‘Operation Brahma’ marks the first phase of India’s relief efforts, with officials hinting at more aid to follow based on Myanmar’s requirements. Rescue operations in the affected regions continue, and updates on the situation, including casualty figures, are expected as access to remote areas improves. India’s proactive response underscores its role as a key humanitarian partner in the region.
