India, Pakistan Agree to Maintain Ceasefire, Build Confidence Measures: Army

India and Pakistan have agreed to uphold confidence-building measures following the May 10 ceasefire understanding between their DGMOs, the Indian Army said on Thursday.

The Indian Army announced on Thursday that both India and Pakistan will continue implementing confidence-building measures (CBMs) to ease tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). The statement follows a ceasefire understanding reached during DGMO-level talks on May 10 after four days of heightened hostilities.

“As the situation develops further, we shall intimate you,” the Army’s official communication said, indicating ongoing monitoring and coordination between the two militaries.

Meanwhile, news agency AFP Reported Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told the National Assembly in Islamabad that the ceasefire agreement will remain in effect until May 18. “Today we had a conversation and it is a ceasefire until May 18,” Dar said, citing recent military-to-military communications.

However, the Indian Army has disputed claims that a new round of DGMO talks occurred on Wednesday, saying the May 10 conversation remains the most recent formal exchange.

The current ceasefire follows a period of intense military escalation. On May 7, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’—a series of precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir—following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives.

In retaliation, Pakistan targeted Indian military installations between May 8 and 10 using drones and missiles, prompting fears of a wider conflict. The ceasefire understanding was reached late on May 10, halting hostilities after days of cross-border attacks.

The flare-up had triggered global concern, with international actors urging restraint. Tensions were further complicated by Turkey and Azerbaijan’s vocal support for Pakistan, prompting India to revoke several diplomatic and business ties with Turkish entities.

Though the ceasefire marks a temporary halt, military officials and diplomatic observers stress that the situation remains fragile and could escalate without continued restraint from both sides.
