India Set To Launch New Cancer Vaccine for Women: What You Need to Know
In a significant step towards combating cancer in women, Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav announced that India is on the brink of launching a new cancer vaccine specifically designed for women. This vaccine, expected to be available within five to six months, targets breast, oral, and cervical cancers, which are among the most prevalent cancers affecting women in India.
The vaccine will be available for girls aged 9 to 16 years, aiming to provide early prevention against these types of cancer. This age group is chosen because vaccination at a younger age can be more effective in preventing the onset of cancer later in life.
According to Minister Jadhav, the research phase of the vaccine is nearly complete, with trials currently underway. This suggests that the vaccine could be in public use by mid-2025, marking a significant advancement in public health in India. The government’s proactive approach includes not only the development of this vaccine but also steps to increase screening and early detection capabilities.

The announcement comes alongside other health initiatives by the Indian government. Women over 30 will benefit from enhanced screening at hospitals, and new daycare cancer centres are being established to facilitate early detection. Moreover, to make treatment more accessible, the government has waived customs duties on cancer treatment medicines, which should help in reducing the cost of care.
Jadhav also touched on the integration of Ayush practices into mainstream healthcare, noting that there are already 12,500 health facilities across the country where people can avail of these services. The government plans to expand this number, aiming to blend traditional medicine with modern healthcare practices for a holistic approach to health.
