India Slams Vandalism of Hindu Temple in California, Demands Strict Action

India on Sunday strongly condemned the vandalism of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, California, terming it a “despicable act.” The temple, one of the largest Hindu shrines in southern California, was defaced with anti-India graffiti. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged local authorities to act swiftly against the culprits.

The vandalism occurred on Sunday, marking yet another attack on a Hindu temple in the US within months. Graffiti with anti-India messages was found on the temple walls. This follows similar incidents in Sacramento and New York last year.

“We condemn such despicable acts in the strongest terms,” the MEA said in an official statement. It called on law enforcement to take strict action and ensure the safety of worship places. The ministry highlighted growing concerns over such incidents targeting the Hindu community.

The BAPS Public Affairs wing confirmed the desecration on X, stating, “The Hindu community stands steadfast against hate.” It added, “Together with Chino Hills and Southern California, we will never let hate take root. Our faith ensures peace prevails.”

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also condemned the act. “Another Hindu temple vandalized—this time in Chino Hills, CA,” it posted on X. The group linked the incident to a so-called ‘Khalistan referendum’ planned in Los Angeles soon.

In September 2024, the BAPS temple in Sacramento was hit with “Hindus go back” graffiti and damaged water lines. Days earlier, a temple in Melville, New York, faced similar hate messages. Both incidents drew sharp criticism from Indian authorities.

The Chino Hills Police Department has yet to comment on the latest vandalism. In Sacramento, police classified the attack as a potential hate crime and launched an investigation. Similar probes are expected in Chino Hills.

Authorities are likely to ramp up security at Hindu temples across the US following this incident. The MEA’s call for action may prompt diplomatic talks with US officials. Updates on the police investigation are awaited as the community seeks justice.
