Rahul Gandhi Questions Jaishankar Over Operation Sindoor Remarks, Alleges Pakistan Was Informed

Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused the Centre of compromising national security by allegedly informing Pakistan ahead of Operation Sindoor, questioning the role of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticised the Narendra Modi-led government over its handling of Operation Sindoor, alleging that informing Pakistan of India’s military action was a “crime.” Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi questioned who authorised the move and whether the Indian Air Force paid a price for it.

“Informing Pakistan at the start of our attack was a crime. EAM has publicly admitted that the Government of India did it. Who authorised it? How many aircraft did our air force lose as a result?” Gandhi posted.

He also shared a video clip of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in which the minister can purportedly be heard stating that India had communicated with Pakistan at the onset of the operation, clarifying that the strikes were aimed solely at terror infrastructure—not the Pakistani military.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) issued a clarification denying the claim that India had informed Pakistan before Operation Sindoor. According to the PIB Fact Check Unit, Jaishankar did not say India pre-warned Pakistan and is being misquoted.

In the clip shared by Rahul Gandhi, Jaishankar is heard stating:

“At the start of the operation, we had sent a message to Pakistan, saying, ‘We are striking at terrorist infrastructure and we are not striking at the military. So the military has the option of standing out and not interfering in this process. They chose not to take that good advice.'”

The fact-checking division stated the remarks were taken out of context and did not amount to forewarning.

The row comes amid heightened political tension over Operation Sindoor, launched in retaliation to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The operation targeted terror camps in Pakistan’s Punjab province and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The Congress has consistently accused the Modi government of lacking transparency in handling cross-border military operations and ceasefire diplomacy.

Gandhi’s criticism follows mounting concerns within opposition ranks about how India’s foreign policy is being managed, especially in sensitive defence matters.
