'It Could Lead To...' US Embassy Warns Indian Nationals After Woman Caught Shoplifting in Illinois

The US Embassy in India has issued a sharp advisory warning Indian nationals that theft and burglary in the United States could lead to visa revocation and future ineligibility, hours after an Indian woman was caught shoplifting from a Target store in Illinois.

In a post on X, the embassy stated, “Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won’t just cause you legal issues – it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future U.S. visas. The United States values law and order and expects foreign visitors to follow all U.S. laws.”

The advisory came after an Indian woman was detained for allegedly attempting to steal merchandise worth around $1,300 from a Target outlet in Illinois. According to local reports, store staff grew suspicious after the woman was seen inside the store for over seven hours, prompting them to alert authorities. Police were called in, and the woman was taken in for questioning.

The incident took place earlier this week, and the woman reportedly later offered to pay for the items she attempted to steal. Local police are currently investigating the case.

While the identity of the woman has not been disclosed, the incident has sparked discussions on social media, with many users urging Indian travellers to remain mindful of local laws while abroad to avoid legal and immigration consequences.

US immigration attorneys note that under American law, even minor theft charges can lead to severe immigration consequences, including visa cancellation, removal proceedings, and permanent ineligibility to return.

The advisory aligns with the United States’ consistent position on maintaining law and order and reflects a broader effort by the US Embassy to inform Indian travellers of the serious repercussions of legal violations during their stay.

The incident comes at a time when the US remains one of the most popular destinations for Indian tourists and students, with thousands travelling to the country each year for education, work, and leisure.
