Kolkata Rape Case: Accused Got Into Law College With Low Rank, Alleges BJP

A fresh political storm has erupted over the horrific gang-rape of a student at South Calcutta Law College, with the BJP on Monday alleging that one of the arrested accused gained admission to the prestigious institution despite securing a very low rank in the entrance examination.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, in a post on X, claimed that the accused student, Zaib Ahmed, was admitted to the college with a “dismal” rank of 2634 in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET-UG 2024). Malviya questioned how this was possible when many “meritorious and law-abiding students with far better ranks are being denied admission.”

“Who gave Zaib Ahmed a seat in this prestigious law college? Who is protecting him? We demand answers. And we demand them NOW,” Malviya wrote, directly targeting the Trinamool Congress-led state government. “Welcome to Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal—where the rule of law is mocked and institutions are systematically destroyed to protect criminals with political connections,” he added.

The allegation adds another layer to the case that has already caused widespread public outrage in Kolkata and across the country.

Zaib Ahmed, 19, was arrested along with former student and prime accused Monojit Mishra, 31, and another student, Pramit Mukherjee, for the brutal assault on a 24-year-old law student inside the college’s security guard room on June 25. The security guard has also been taken into custody.

According to the police complaint, the survivor was assaulted after she rejected a marriage proposal from Mishra. Enraged, he allegedly conspired with the others, forcibly took her to the room, and raped her while his accomplices recorded the crime to blackmail her later.

The incident has drawn chilling parallels to last year’s rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which had also led to massive protests. The latest crime and the new allegations of irregularities in college admissions have intensified the political heat in West Bengal, with the opposition BJP accusing the ruling TMC of fostering a culture of lawlessness and protecting criminals.
